Check out interview with me and few of my fellow windsurfers in new Motion Magazin! :)
Can't really tell what they wrote, as my Dutch is bad lately ;) It is a story on few of the wave and freestyle ladies: Nayra Alonso, Uli Hölzl, Eva Oude Ophuis, Amanda Beenen, Anna Blanch, Sarah-Quita Offringa, Arrianne Aukes, Laure Treboux and myself:)

The story on me was based on few questions I answered. Here they are:

Name: Justyna Sniady

Date of birth: 31.08.1985

Where were you born? Warsaw, Poland

Where did you grow up (if different from previous) same

Parents (do or did they windsurf?)
My Mum never windsurfed but always supported my passion handling me being on my own in the waves unbelievably well . My Dad windsurfs whenever he can (when he can take time off work) and he was the one who taught me first steps too.

When did you start windsurfing? Long time ago.. in the times of Robby Naish and Josh Stone. When I was 12.

Where? In Poland on a lake.

What was the reason you started windsurfing?
My Dad used to do a lot of sports. He once heard about windsurfing rental place on a lake in Poland from his friend and decided to try. He put me and my brother on a board once or twice when I was 7. When I was 12 my older brother (who I always tired to keep up with) decided to do a weeklong windsurfing camp. I went with him, got planning the first time with my eyes wide open and never stoped thinking about windsurfing since. Even tho I had an opportunity to sail for week or two a year for long period of time, I was fallowing everything I could - still have about 700 magazines from these days, I even learned german reading Surf Magazine, cos it was my favourite for pictures and posters so I wanted to read it!

When did you become a pro? (or when did you decide that you were going for it) Never became a pro and I don't think I ever will. I will charge on the PWA tour whenever I get a chance and time off work, cos it makes me push harder and motivates to try stuff on the water. But a pro is someone who windsurfs almost year round and can live off windsurfing solely, which is not the case for me. I count days I sail a year, and even tho I surf "a lot" for me lately, it still doesn't cross 2 months a year. I also work full time now. I still consider myself a soul surfer and I actually like it that way. I try to spread windsurfing disease as much as I can, but it doesn't occur via competition much anyway.

Can you be a pro as a female windsurfer? Of course you can - look at Moreno Twins, Karin Jaggi, Nayra Alonso and many others.

What else do you do (work, school, hobby's)?
I just graduated with an MBA from Murdoch Uni in Australia last year. Also did Economics at Warsaw Uni and a Diploma in Multimedia at Perth Collage before that. I think I am done with school for now!
I am now working as a graphic designer and marketing person for an Australian company, and just created my own business recently that builds an online windsurfing catalogue (soon to be on line www.surfadviser.com)

I am also working on a big movie project just now - but its still a secret! ;)

Hobbys: Still Windsurfing :) Snowboard, Motorbikes (lately mainly MotoX), Cars (off-road and drifting), Wakeboarding, Surfing, Horseback riding, Basketball, Soccer and other sports, graphical design, movie editing, photography, fixing diesel engines :D, travel, languages, music, reading, cooking and TALKING!

What is it like to be in such a men's world (do you see it as such?)
Yeah I do - there's a lot of guys around. haha.

Advantages: There's a lot of guys around.

Disadvantages: There's a lot of guys around.

Who do you most like to go windsurfing with? Levi Siver...75l haha. that's the name of my quad :P
With my Dad, but unfortunately don't get a chance too often. I normally, like to have as many of my friends on the water with me as possible, cheering each other and pushing each other to try stuff. As long as they stay off my wave! haha! kidding - sharing a wave with a friend is awesome as well!

What are your favourite moves? Pushloop ! It looks hardcore but is really easy! All you need is guts! It's even easier then forward! I like forwards of course as when you go around once - you go to a whole different level of windsurfing! Forward is a wholly grail of jumps! Recently since I spent some time on Australian waves, I am really into making as aggressive cut backs as I can or throwing an aerial of the lip! Oh and my ultimate favourite trick is pushloop-forward but this is yet to come for me hehe!

Best places to go for girls windsurf holidays?
Same as it is for guys windsurf holidays. Anywhere with good wind and waves. Or bump and jump or whatever conditions you like.
If girls travel on their own though, I wouldn't recommend South Africa for example (from what I've heard - haven't been there yet). Think it's one of the spots where you want to go with other people as well. I went through Western Australia on my own few times, sleeping in the car and I also had few situation there, when I was freaking scared, but also due to a very unreliable car! At least I learned a lot about diesel engines! haha!
Girls can go whenever whey want really and they will enjoy it as much as guys do, I'm sure. If there is sleeping in the car, no showering and eating stuff from the cans involved - they can treat it as part of the adventure! It all depends more on how independent you are (and I met many girls travelling that were more self-reliable then half of the guy windsurfers I know! haha!) and what vibe you like - Australian bush, Palm trees of Hawaii, Rocks of Pozo or unique Polish cost-line!;)

Best places you went to? I really like Western Australia a lot. Unbelievable waves, animals, views, people, vibe, everything!

No 1 on your list of place you haven't been to yet but really want to go?!
There is many places I'd love to still windsurf in like Chile or Brazil, but if I am to choose one then (even though it's starboard tack) I would say Maui, Hawaii - as it is windsurfing mekka and a dream of mine since I was a kid. When I was 13 and couldn't even jibe yet (when very few people heard about windsurfing in Poland even, not mentioning waveriding) I used to watch RIP video with Naish and collect posters of JAWS dreaming of sailing them one day! I was even waking up with nightmares at night dreaming of drowning there I though about it so much haha!

Any advice for girls joining the sport? Why should they?

They should try windsurfing for the same reason as they should try anything else. Because it is worth trying different things in life. It is worth using every opportunity to take up new challenges in life whether it is sport, business, school, cooking or whatever, you name it, and trying to visit as many places in the world as possible and meet as many interesting people as possible. That's an exciting world out there and we should learn as much as we can while we are here. Sounds like a cliché but it's true! And as far as sports go, I've tried almost everything, and windsurfing bits it all!
Girl should try it to know why that is. I can try to describe the feeling now of being out there in the ocean on your own, counting on yourself only, the feeling of ripping a first wave or landing first high jumps, but it is actually impossible. To know you need to try. And it is worth knowing. That's why they should try!! Being aware that there's no coming back - windsurfing stays in your life forever! It's a healthy virus to have though!

If they try it, my only advice is - stay long enough to get to a level where you can really appreciate what windsurfing has to offer! Don't try once and say it's hard to pull up the sail, or it's boring on the big board or it will take too long to learn. Give yourself an opportunity to discover the freedom you can feel when alone on the water. Try to get to the stage of waterstarts and planning and I am sure you will keep windsurfing in your life forever and also as a very important part of it! Also remember when you get stuck with whatever waterstart, jibe, forward - that you can not say that you will never do something unless you've tried forever!! So just keep trying and enjoy!
